If your lawn mower deck is in top shape, you don’t have to worry about the machine’s performance. Unfortunately, wear and tear will lead to multiple issues over time. And that’s where lawn mower deck repair kits come to the rescue!

Today, we will unbox a repair kit that every lawn mower owner should have. Let’s check it out and get the necessary tools for yourself!

Lawn Mower Deck Repair Kits

The lawn mower deck is a crucial mower component as it houses the blades. This part also allows for the efficient cutting of grass.

Over time, the lawn mower deck may suffer from wear and tear. You will notice issues like blade damage or belt malfunction.

To solve these problems, you need a lawn mower deck repair kit, which includes the following tools:

Idle pulley

The idle pulley maintains tension on the deck belt. If it gets damaged, the belt will slip or become loose. Hence, your repair kit should have the pulley to replace the broken one in your lawn mower.

Blades

Blades can become dull over time, decreasing cutting performance. You will easily notice an uneven lawn appearance. Sometimes, they don’t even cut at all

As a result, lawn mower deck repair kits often include replacement blades that fit specific mower models.

Deck belt

The deck belt enables the blades to rotate and cut the grass. If it wears out, your lawn mower can’t run properly. Hence, remember to check if your repair kit has the replacement deck belt.

Spindle assemblies

Spindle assemblies hold the blades in place. You also need them to ensure smooth blade operation.

Extra tools

In addition to those specific components, lawn mower deck repair kits include extra tools such as wrenches, sockets, or screwdrivers. They will help you disassemble the deck, remove old components, and install new ones.

Moreover, the lawn mower deck may become rusted over time. In this case, you don’t need to replace it. A few tools, like the glass matting, sandpaper, resin, wire brush, or epoxy repair mower deck kit, can help you fix it.

How To Repair a Rusted Mower Deck?

Now you have a valuable lawn mower deck repair kit. If your mower deck wears out and becomes rusted, please follow these steps to recover it.

Step 1: Prepare the workspace

Clear suitable workspace that can accommodate the mower deck. It should handle the top and bottom of the deck, along with your tools and materials.

Then, move a table or workbench to the center of your workspace, such as in the garage. Besides, you should avoid areas like the living room or kitchen.

Next, position the mower by tilting its deck. You must also support it securely using a sturdy object or a jack stand.

Finally, wear protective gloves, goggles, and a dust mask to protect yourself from any potential hazards.

Step 2: Clean the deck

Thoroughly clean your mower deck to remove loose dirt, debris, and grass clippings. You can use a pressure washer or a brush at this step.

Cleaning the mower deck carefully will help you identify the extent of the rust damage. It also ensures the repair materials adhere properly to the deck.

Step 3: Remove the rusted material

Using a grinder to remove the rusted areas on the deck. Focus on the loose and flaking rust until you reach a solid, stable surface.

Step 4: Treated the rusted areas

Now, apply rust-inhibiting paint to the areas affected by rust. Then, set it aside for about ten minutes and apply the second coat.

The Tannic Acid in the paint contains Organic Polymer, which can convert rust into a stable material named Iron Tannate. Hence, it’s a good choice for dealing with rust.

Cut fiberglass matting into small pieces to cover the patches. You can use scissors and create a two-inch excess beyond the patch area. For example, if the patch is six inches wide, you need to cut the mat to ten inches wide.

Next, mix the activator and resin following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 5: Apply the glass matting

Apply the mixed resin generously to the edge of the mower deck where you will repair the rusted area.

Then, place a glass matting in position and use the paintbrush to cover it with a new epoxy layer. You need to alternate between the outside and inside of the matting.

Repeat those steps for all matting pieces. After that, finish with a final coat of epoxy. Now, let it sit overnight to cure.

Step 6: Sand the surface and apply paint

After the epoxy has hardened, use sandpaper to sand the fiberglass lightly. This step will create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to.

Next, apply your chosen finish paint. It would be best to give the outside of the deck some coats using a matching paint color.

Meanwhile, the underside of the deck requires a high-durability, two-part epoxy paint. It provides long-lasting protection and helps prevent future rusting.
